Relief
in the Aftermath of Hurricane Felix
Hurricane Felix made landfall on the coast of Nicaragua Tuesday, September 4 as a category 5 storm. Torrential rains and winds in excess of 150 mph destroyed homes, roads and bridges, caused severe flooding, and contaminated water sources. To help storm victims, Water Missions International joined forces with the American Red Cross of Miami and Samaritan’s Purse to provide the first five Living Water ™ Treatment Systems (LWTS™) to areas in greatest need. The Systems provide access to safe water and, in turn, help to decrease the likelihood of serious illnesses and disease outbreaks due to contaminated water.
The Systems were installed in the following places:
-
Santa Marta
- Hospital publico de puerto cabezas
- Li-dacura
- Dakura
- Auastara
Conclusion:
Five Systems were installed in the places that represented the most need and demonstrated a commitment to follow-up after the emergency and relocate the Systems.
Local organizations were involved in deciding where the Systems
were placed, and Water Missions explained the follow-up process to each of these organizations.
Institutions that assisted with the transportation of Systems: PAHO, Nicaragua Health Department and Air Force.
